What is excavation & trenching?
Excavation is moving earth to a planned line, depth and slope — a trench for a pipe, a hole for a footing, or a cut across a site. It is measured work, not just digging.
Do I need it?
If a line, pipe, footing or structure has to go below ground, it needs excavating first. If you're not sure what depth or width you need, tell us what's going in the ground and we'll work from that.

- Standing water that needs a drainage route

Pipe, cable, footing, drainage — plus rough length and depth.

Backhoe, excavator or skid steer depending on depth and access.

Line locating
Buried utilities need to be located and marked before we dig.

We dig
To the line, depth and slope the job calls for.

Backfill
Backfilled and tidied once whatever goes in the ground is in.
What determines cost?
We don't publish prices we can't stand behind. These are the things that move the number:
- Length, width and depth of the dig
- Soil conditions — caliche, clay, sand or rock
- Groundwater
- Access for the machine
- Whether spoil is reused on site or hauled off
- Backfill and compaction requirements
Before we arrive
- Have buried utility lines located and marked
- Mark the route or footprint you want dug
- Clear vehicles and obstacles from the work area
Common questions
Excavation & Trenching FAQ
- Who marks the underground utilities?
- Locating buried lines has to be arranged before digging starts. Tell us where that stands and we'll make sure it's sorted before we break ground.
- How deep can you dig?
- It depends on the machine and the ground. Tell us the depth you need and we'll tell you whether it's a job for us.
- What happens to the dirt you dig out?
- It can be spread on site, stockpiled or hauled off. Say which you'd prefer.
